IFS Research Grants

The International Foundation for Science (IFS) supports developing country scientists’ (social and natural) research relating to the renewable utilization of biological resources. Applicants must be a scientist and a citizen of a developing country, have at least a MSc or equivalent degree and be under 40 years of age (30 for Chinese applicants). They must be working at a university or research institution in a developing country and their institutions are expected to provide salaries and basic research facilities. IFS support is primarily financial and in the form of a research grant of up to US$ 12,000, which may be renewed twice. Each grant is for one research period, normally not less than one year nor more than three years and is intended for the purchase of the basic tools needed to conduct a research project: equipment, expendable supplies, and literature. It cannot be used for education, travel, or the applicant’s salary. Grants are given to individuals for a specific research project, which must fall within the IFS Research Areas [Aquatic Resources, Animal Production, Crop Science, Forestry/Agroforestry, Food Science, and Natural Products] and the project must be carried out in a developing country. The proposals are received year-round and are judged by an international panel of Scientific Advisers on the basis of the applicant’s personal qualifications, the scientific quality and feasibility of the proposal, and the relevance of the planned research results. The proposals should be of a high scientific standard and should pose new scientific questions; purely technical (simple transfer of existing and well-established technologies) or extension projects will not be accepted.
